Situation

Fibres International, Inc. (“FII”) was one of the largest recycling companies in the Pacific Northwest. It was the market leader in sourcing, collecting, processing, and distributing recyclable material, such as various grades of paper and cardboard, plastics, glass, and aluminum in the Pacific Northwest, Rocky Mountain States, Alaska, and Western Canada. FII’s shareholders realized that the benefits of further growth to gain the economies of scale necessary to compete nationally were outweighed by the potential value of the organization to an established national competitor.

ZS Role

Zachary Scott represented the two owners of FII (MacMillan Blodel Ltd., a $3 billion Canadian forest products company, and the Company’s CEO) in planning for and executing the sale of the business.

Results

Zachary Scott planned and executed a competitive sale process that attracted bids from most of the major participants in the industry. Browning Ferris Industries acquired the Company under very attractive terms to the sellers.
